Private Residence Newton, MA A professional couple with two school age children had the immediate goal of a kitchen renovation and family room addition. Their original house, an 1890s Craftsman Victorian, was in the perfect neighborhood; but the small, distinct rooms didn’t mesh with the family’s lifestyle. They wanted to retain the house’s charming character and existing details, but at the same time, had an eye toward modern design and open, light filled rooms. They wanted a contiguous family and eating space where they could be together, sometimes enjoying one common activity or engaging separate ones. Chan Mock Architects designed a spacious, yet cozy, double height, light flooded family room, open to their functional and warm-toned kitchen and breakfast nook. And in other parts of the house, we made alterations to create more usable and generous spaces. We removed a wall separating the living room from the beautiful oak stair, which made their living room more gracious and inviting; created a lovely dining space with a redesigned fireplace and storage display shelves; as well as removed a wall from the upstairs nursery, converting it to an office that overlooks the family room. |
